Getting married in Quebec: the legal steps, simply
Officiant, witnesses, publication of banns: what to do, and when.
A Quebec wedding is a civil act, even when it is religious. Here are the steps, in order.
1. Choose your officiant
Three main options: a public official (court clerk or designated municipal officiant), a notary, or a designated celebrant for a custom ceremony. The right choice depends on the style of ceremony you want; we help you find the right person.
2. Publish the banns
A publication must be posted at least 20 days before the ceremony. Your officiant handles it. A dispensation is possible in some cases, for a serious reason.
3. Bring two witnesses
Two adult witnesses must attend and sign the declaration of marriage.
4. The declaration of marriage
After the ceremony, the officiant sends the declaration to the Directeur de l'état civil. You can then order your marriage certificate.
With our packages, we manage the timeline of these steps with your officiant. All you have to do is say yes. This is a general summary; your officiant will confirm the requirements for your situation.
